FilterPoint uses a number of content-sensitive metrics to assign a "SPAM Score" to a piece of email. The higher the score, the greater the probability that the message is SPAM. Scores can vary from very negative numbers to very positive numbers. You can set thresholds for the disposition of messages based upon their SPAM score.
Statistical analysis of millions of emailed messages has indicated that most SPAM generally receives a score at least 5.0, and non-SPAM generally receives a score less than 5.0. This is a great place to start from, adjusting for your organization's specific requirements.
ID as SPAM over Score: Default is 5.0. Messages receiving a SPAM score of this value or higher will be identified as SPAM by the FilterPoint system. When a message is identified as spam, the SPAM Score Headers (as described below) will be inserted, with the addition of X-Spam-Flag which will have a value of YES. This is the basis for the following options (indented below):
Put *SPAM* in Subject: Default is Yes. If set to Yes, when a message is identified as SPAM, the system will change the subject line to start with the word *SPAM* to indicate this.Put Score in Mail Header: Default is No. If set to Yes, all forwarded email will indicate the assigned SPAM score in the message headers. Messages identified as SPAM will always have these score headers even if this setting is No. You can use this to analyze received messages to make decisions about setting SPAM score thresholds for the above items. Note that killed mail will never make it this far. The headers added are:Kill Spam over Score: Default is 10.0. Here, you can set the threshold score at which you a message tagged as SPAM should be "killed." A message that is "killed" will NOT be forwarded to the intended recipient. You can set the score to a numeric value or choose "Never."
Redirect Killed Spam To: If a message is to be "killed" (see Kill Level above), any message identified as SPAM will be forwarded to this email address instead of the original recipient. This address must be within your domain. BEWARE! This must be a valid mailbox. If it is not, these messages will disappear forever. Also, be sure that this mailbox has a large capacity, as it could grow very quickly when mail volume goes up. Default is empty, which means killed SPAM is deleted forever. Please note that the subject line will not be modified with the word *SPAM* on messages that have been killed and redirected.
| X-Spam-Level | One asterisk (*) per point scored |
|---|---|
| X-Spam-Status | For SPAM: Yes, hits=nn required=nn For non-SPAM: No, hits=nn required=nn followed by a list of tests that were matched, if any. |
Bypass SPAM Checks: Default is No. If this person is the only recipient of the mail, no SPAM checks will be run at all. If someone wants all SPAM, set this to Yes and also set the Kill Level to Never.
Bypass Virus Checks: Default is No. If you for some reason want to bypass virus checks, change this to Yes. Changing this for a whole domain will disable virus checking for everyone! Be careful with this option.
